In a landmark move to transform Tanzania’s maritime and inland logistics landscape, the operational agreements for the Kwala Inland Container Depot (ICD) were officially signed this past week—marking a direct launch by Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The event, held at the Port Conference Hall in Dar Es’ Salaam, signals a strategic shift aimed at decongesting Dar Es’ Salaam Port and reinforcing Tanzania’s strengths in maritime trade and supply chain efficiency.
Among the distinguished witnesses to this milestone was our Tanzania Country Director, Esther Mbuya, who also serves as a member of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC). Her presence underscored our company’s deep commitment to regulatory alignment, stakeholder collaboration, and the future of inland cargo coordination.
Strengthening the Maritime Backbone.
The agreements—signed by six key institutions including TASAC, TPA, TRC, TRA, TASAA, DP World, and TEAGL—lay the groundwork for streamlined cargo transfer from the port to the Kwala ICD. This inland facility, located over 30 kilometers from the city center and rail-linked for optimal connectivity, is poised to become a cornerstone of Tanzania’s logistics infrastructure.
Speaking at the event, TASAC Director General Mr. Mohammed Salum emphasized the importance of transparency, regulatory adherence, and inclusiveness in shaping the operational framework.
“Our regulatory guidance on inland port procedures is designed to ensure that the establishment of ICDs enhances the performance of Dar Es’ Salaam Port without disrupting other social and economic activities in the city,” he stated.
